* For the first 9 miles, the trail consists of a single 10-foot wide paved trail that is well suited to bicycling, in-line skating, walking and jogging. * The paved trail then narrows to 8 feet and it is joined by a separate limestone trail. * Although primarily designed for horseback riding, carriage driving and cross-country skiing, this unpaved trail is not closed to other uses. * Unauthorized motorized vehicles are not permitted anywhere on the trail. * The Gateway Trail stretches across level ground and is accessible to people with disabilities and the elderly. Trail Passes Required for Horse Riders & Skiers The
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds horse riders to
buy their Horse Trail Pass. The pass costs $21 for the calendar year
purchased, and is required on horse trails within state parks, state
forests, state trails, and state recreation areas for anyone 16 years
of age and older. Cost for a daily pass is $5.
The Horse Trail Pass is required on all State Trails, including the
Gateway Segment of the Willard Munger State Trail. To purchase a pass

Conservation Officers may periodically check riders for permits.
Cross Country Skiers should go to www.dnr.state.mn.us/skiing/index.html for addtional details You must sign your ski pass and carry it with you when skiing. Trail Use Tips
* Keep to the right side of the trail. Alert other trail users, especially horses, when passing. * Respect the rights of other trail users. * Yield to slower moving traffic. * Keep the trail clean; pack out your litter. * Stay on the trail. * Dont trespass on adjacent property. * Drug and alcohol use is prohibited. * Camping and fires are not allowed. * There are few trailside services east of I-694. Plan to bring water. * Pets must be leashed and under control.
